Résumé : |
This study focused on detecting and mapping circular features in Algeria using a GIS technique. The methodology; mainly relied on the FABDEM, a digital elevation model that removes buildings and forests from the standard DEM to enhance the observation. The primary aim was to create an inventory of circular structures in the country and to identify new potential impact craters. The approach revealed 839 circular features of different origins and geometries, among which four outlines were selected for further remote-sensing and GIS analyses suggesting their candidacy as impact craters. Notably, the majority of these features are attributed to volcanism as they are detected within the volcanic districts of the Hoggar. Numerous magmatic complexes were also uncovered typically within the intrusions of the Middle and the Upper Proterozoic of Ahaggar that may be associated with significant economic deposits. Upon completing the investigation, over 2,000 maps were generated using satellite imagery, FABDEM, and geological maps to visualize the structures. Furthermore, a detailed dataset was conducted; encompassing all the information related to the structures like size, location, and lithostratigraphy. This inventory opens the door for future investigations and sets a foundation for advancing geological research in Algeria. |
