This book provides a very good introduction to early Islamic architecture from Mesopotamia to the Iberian peninsula. (As explained in the introduction, it does not cover Islamic architecture in Persia/Iran or south Asia.) The text is clear, well-written and informative, providing a history of Islam through the lens of architecture and art. The buildings included are almost entirely mosques and palaces; the focus is on the masterpieces of Islamic architecture. Color photographs (many of them full-page) and architectural plans and diagrams grace every page, illustrating not only the buildings but also mosaics, murals, ivory and stone carvings, and illuminated manuscripts. There are abundant pictures of the architectural details that make these monuments so breath-taking
